Good news for your wallet: “Unless
you’re a cardiac patient or are
following doctor’s orders to exercise
within specific limits, you really don’t need to track
your heart rate that closely,” Dr. Peeke says. So forgo
the monitor— along with GPS trackers, Wi-Fi bath-
room scales, and other pricey gizmos that digitize
your results. In most cases, the best gauge of a good
workout is how you feel, Dr. Peeke says, a measure
called the rate of perceived exertion: On a scale of 1-10,
with 3 being a leisurely stroll and 10 being maximum
effort, you want to be around 5, an intensity at which
your heart and breathing rate are elevated but you’re
not gasping for breath. (And if you’re one of the people
who really do need a heart monitor, ask your doctor for
an affordable recommendation— basic versions of these
devices cost as little as $35.)
